“Bake, Bake a Cake” *Dramatic Play Center

Song

https://nursery-rhymes-lyrics.com/bake-bake-cake/

After the students had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the “Itty Bitty Bakery” dramatic play center, I would share this song with them. This song and accompanying video depicts the clothing that bakers wear, introduces the common ingredients used in baking a cake, demonstrates counting (the seven ingredients), illustrates the physical motions of pouring the ingredients, using the oven, and decorating the cake. It also shows multiple bakers working together, which teaches the students about teamwork and collaboration. This is a song I could play for the students multiple times, and as time went on, I would encourage them to sing along with it.

Pat-A-Cake *Dramatic Play Center

Fingerplay

https://www.nurseryrhymes.org/pat-a-cake.html

I would introduce the students to this finger play at the very beginning of the school year, before they had much exposure to the dramatic play center. I would do this because I suspect that a lot of the students might already be familiar with it. However, I would introduce it to the whole class, knowing that not everyone was familiar with it. This would prompt the students to start thinking about baking in a fun and interactive way before diving into the dramatic play center. Additionally, it would give them a little bit of background knowledge on baking.

Mix a Pancake *Dramatic Play Center

Chant

This would be a chant that I would do with the students all throughout the year in relation to the dramatic play center. Hopefully, it would get them excited about baking while also exposing them to a food other than traditional cakes that can be baked.

Poem

This is a poem I would share with my students at multiple points throughout the year. This poem would teach them not only about literacy elements such as a rhyme scheme but also about the concept of sharing.

Itsy Bitsy Spider

Fingerplay

https://www.dltk-teach.com/rhymes/spider/mlyrics.htm

This is a fingerplay that helps the students work on their fine motor skills. Additionally, it teaches the students the word: spout. This is a fingerplay I would teach to the students when discussing nature. This fingerplay could lead into discussions of weather, water, insects, and more.

Hello, Hello

Chant

https://www.myece.org.nz/activities-for-childhood-learning/213-chants-kiwi-chants-and-fun-chants-that-kids-love

This chant is one that could be used all year long. However, it would be especially useful during the first couple of weeks of school when the students are all still getting to know each other. Additionally, it is great for the morning, when everybody first arrives at school because it is a positive way to start the day!

A Worm in My Pocket by Jodee Samano

Poem

https://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poem/a-worm-in-my-pocket

I would introduce this poem to the students before a discussion about nature. This poem teaches the students an ethical lesson about respecting the living things on our planet. Even though the speaker of the poem wants to keep the worm in his or her pocket, he or she realizes it is in the best interest of the worm to let it be free in the dirt.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

Song

https://allnurseryrhymes.com/twinkle-twinkle-little-star/

Singing this song would be a great way to relax the students. Before having a quiet break or before an assessment, it might be helpful to sing this song to get the students into a calm, peaceful mindset. Also, this song introduces the concept of rhyming. Furthermore, this song could lead into discussions of nighttime and space.

My First Pet by Kevin T. Pearson

Poem

https://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poem/my-first-pet

Sharing this poem with the students would open their minds to the many different animals on Earth. This poem would likely teach them some new animal names including: armadillo. Additionally, this poem has a rhyme scheme. It would be good to read this poem when the students are learning about animals and/or rhyming.

Here is the Beehive

Fingerplay

https://childhood101.com/15-preschool-counting-songs-fingerplays-rhymes/

This fingerplay reinforces counting for the students as they count to five. Additionally, it strengthens their fine motor skills. Lastly, it teaches the students that bees live in a hive. I would practice this fingerplay with the students at the beginning of the year as a review for math. Additionally, I might use this fingerplay before or after teaching a lesson about bees.
