Materials Needed: container, water, alphabet letter magnets, ladle
Directions: The teacher and the students will make a pot of alphabet soup using water and alphabet letter magnets. The students will take turns using the ladle to scoop out a letter from the soup. wall%20is%20used.in%20many%20early%20childhood%20programs

Addressing: alphabet letter recognition, letter sound recognition, emergent reading skills

Summary: Word walls are great tools for helping students strengthen their reading skills and learn site words. The students can also build upon their knowledge of the alphabet, letter sounds, sequencing, and vocabulary.

Materials: alphabet letters, word cards, image cards, velcroe
Directions: As the students learn new words, the appropriate word cards will be added to the word wall. Eventually, the students can shift these cards to construct sentences. While the students are still learning the alphabet, alphabet cards can be used in place of the word cards. Similarly, each time the students learn a new alphabet letter, the matching letter card can be added to the wall. Once all of the letter cards have been added, the students can sequence them in alphabetical order. Image cards can also be used to help the students remember the letters and words.

3. Name: What Picture Matches this Sound?

URL: https://www.oise.utoronto.ca/balancedliteracydiet/Recipe/00121/

Addressing: phonemic awareness, alphabet letter recognition
Summary: Together, the students and the teacher will identify the names of each of the images contained on the cards. Then, there will be a discussion of the sound that the name of each image begins with. For example, for a card containing an image of a cat, the /c/ sound will be noted. Additionally, the students will identify the letter making that sound. Thus, in this example, the students will deduce that the word cat begins with the /c/ sound and starts with the letter "c". This will highlight the students' phonemic awareness.

Materials: image cards
Directions: The image cards will be displayed in a way that is visible to everyone. Then, during a class discussion, names for each of the images on the cards will be agreed upon. After this, the teacher will instruct each student to choose a card. Once every student has selected his or her card, he or she will be prompted to identify the name of the image, the letter the name begins with, and the sound that letter makes.

4. Name: Toss the Cube

URL: https://www.oise.utoronto.ca/balancedliteracydiet/Recipe/00007/

Addressing: phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fine motor

Summary: This game encourages students to brainstorm words beginning with particular letters and sounds. This will assist the students in expanding their vocabularies and phonemic awareness.

Materials: cube, marker

Directions: The teacher will choose a letter to write on each side of the cube. Then, the students will take turns rolling the cube. The side of the cube that lands face up indicates the letter that has been chosen. The student who has rolled this letter will be prompted to think of a word beginning with that letter and sound. After doing this, it will be time for the next student to roll. Since no word can be repeated twice, the students will be challenged to come up with creative words. Even those students who have not yet rolled, will be building their vocabulary through the exposure and explanations of words given by others.

5. Name: Hello, My Name is . . .

URL: https://www.oise.utoronto.ca/balancedliteracydiet/Recipe/00171/

Addressing: emergent phonics

Summary: As the students substitute the first letter of their and their peers' names with a different letter, they will build upon their emergent phonics skills. Sounding out their new names is fun and will have an impact on the students.

Materials: designated letter sound, list of students' names

Directions: A designated letter sound is required for this activity. The students will use this particular letter sound as a substitute for the first letter in their name. For example, if a student is named Sara, and the letter sound is /b/, then Sara's new name will become "Bara". Together, the class will repeat this name along with the name of the letter "b" and the /b/ sound. This process can be repeated for each students' name.
